Managing Director

Andrew Brough

The firm was founded by Andrew Brough in 2018 who is a qualified Costs Lawyer (with Distinction) and regulated by the Costs Lawyer Standards Board. He has a BA (Hons) degree in Accounting & Law from Newcastle University, followed by a Diploma in Legal Practice at Northumbria University.

Expertise
Andrew’s work in Legal Costs involves:

  • Undertaking costs work in a wide range of scenarios, including High Costs Case Plans and all stages of the costs budgeting process;
  • Regulars attendance at costs hearings on behalf of clients (including CCMCs, applications for relief from sanctions and high value commercial costs disputes);
  • Providing “in house” training to Law Firms with regards to the specific area of costs presentation, designed to improve efficiency and productivity; and
  • Working in unusual or sensitive procedures on behalf of clients, whilst providing interim advice and attending client premises where required.

Andrew has established many long-term relationships with clients over the years and is available for ad-hoc advice and explanation on procedures/issues.

About Andrew
Away from the world of costs, Andrew is Cumbrian born and interested in most sports. He annually takes part in the Great North Run and is a lifelong supporter of Newcastle United Football Club.

Head of Court of Protection

Ana Matos

As a Costs Specialist with a focus on Court of Protection, Ana brings a wealth of experience and expertise to every case she handles. Her journey in legal costs started with inter-partes work and she later developed an interest in this niche field of Court of Protection, dedicating her time to mastering its complexities and intricacies.

Ana approaches each case with meticulous attention to detail, ensuring that costs are accurately assessed and transparently managed in accordance with the relevant rules, legal principles, and guidelines. She is dedicated to client care and understands the importance of building trust and rapport with clients and providing advice and training to ensure clients are receiving maximum benefit.

About Ana
In her spare time, Ana enjoys travelling and exploring exciting new places and embraces opportunities to hike through beautiful forests with her dog Lola. She has a keen interest in transforming raw materials into personalised works of art, whether it is upcycling old furniture, crafting handmade gifts, or experimenting with new techniques.

Costs Law Associate

Phil Taylor

Phil is an excellent problem solver, with a keen eye for detail which he brings to his day-to-day work at Brough Partners, supporting a range of Legal Aid claims for clients, from Domestic Abuse to Public Law Care files.

Expertise
In 2009 Phil completed a degree in Sports Coaching and spent fifteen years coaching junior football at grassroots level where he developed excellent communication skills and a keen eye for detail. In 2016, Phil changed direction to pursue his career in Law, which from a young age had always been a passion of his and in 2021 completed his LLB through the Open University.

He is a determined and enthusiastic member of the team who brings with him a well-rounded set of skills and experience to the company, providing excellent levels of service to clients.

About Phil
Phil was previously a Bradford City season ticket holder for some 20 years. He is also a keen traveler which in 2019 saw him spend 10 weeks in North America visiting a range of cities and sights including Pearl Harbour, Washington DC, and his personal favourite Vancouver.

Trainee Costs Lawyer

Liam Moir

Liam has both an LLB in Law together with a Masters in Legal Practice from Huddersfield University. Prior to joining Brough Partners, Liam had gained work experience in many areas of legal practice at different  solicitor firms. This included updating of files, client contact and interviews, case management systems, and legal aid applications via the Online Portal.

He also has the CIPD Level 3 Foundation Certificate in People Practice enhancing his commercial awareness and employment law knowledge.

About Liam
His outside interests include football and being a Sunderland AFC season ticket holder, competing in half-marathon running events and reading.

Costs Law Associate

Nicole Nicholson

Nicole has a Bachelor’s Degree with Honours in Criminology and Forensic Science, together with a Masters in Law (Criminal Justice) from Northumbria University.

Her experience in Legal Aid covers a range of areas including working on Child Arrangements and Domestic Abuse together with public law costs claims on behalf of solicitors. She has a keen attention to detail, as to be expected with her Forensic Science background.

About Nicole
Hobbies include taking her dog for long walks around the local country parks, keeping fit and reading.

Costs Law Associate

Connie Hughes

Connie has a range of costing experience in Legal Aid as well as managing teams. She also has experience in ringing Counsel and CCMS work. She takes pride in providing an efficient service as well as quality results for her clients, with their satisfaction at the core. Academically she has a distinction in Business and Criminology and an A in Psychology.

About Connie
Connie’s hobbies include spending time with her family, friends and pet cat Bailey!
